Stevie Struggles to Survive
MILWAUKEE – When you first see Stevie, your eyes well up with tears and you have to choke back a sob. She is a frightful sight with maggots crawling out of her body, a hole in her neck and bones protruding through her thin skin. An employee at the Wisconsin Humane Society found her next to the dumpster at WHS this morning.
Stevie was immediately taken to the veterinary clinic where she was administered antibiotics, shaved and treated for her open wounds. An Animal Care Technician removed as many maggots as she could find from the little dog’s body, but they continue to emerge from under her skin.
Perhaps the most disturbing and tragic aspect of Stevie’s story is that she was left to die by a human being who totally disregarded her immense suffering. This example of animal cruelty is not an isolated incident. Earlier this week, a puppy was surrendered to WHS who had been discovered in a dumpster in the Riverwest neighborhood; he is also in treatment.
Amazing transformations occur with every animal at the Wisconsin Humane Society and hopefully, Stevie will be no exception. She deserves to be healthy, loved and treated with the utmost respect and kindness. For now, WHS veterinarians are doing everything they can to make that possible.
